Real-time political polling, live on air. One app that turns passive viewers into active participants.

EenVandaag is AVROTROS's current affairs programme, running one of the Netherlands' most recognised polling panels. The show wanted to bring its polling data directly to viewers: live political sentiment, trend analysis, and the ability to participate in surveys from their own phone, in real time during broadcast.

The challenge was making complex survey and trend data immediately legible on a small screen, for a general audience rather than data specialists. The app also needed to handle live traffic spikes during broadcast, when thousands of users act simultaneously and data freshness is critical.

Elements built the app in React Native, integrating with EenVandaag's existing CMS and polling infrastructure.

Live polling with real-time results during broadcast

The app syncs with the live show, opening and closing polls in line with what is on air. Users see results update in near real time as votes come in. The UX was designed for speed: participating in a poll takes seconds, so viewers do not miss the broadcast while interacting with the app.

Data visualisation designed for general audiences

Polling data is only valuable if users understand it. We designed charts, trend views, and demographic breakdowns that are immediately readable, without requiring prior knowledge of how polling works. The same data that analysts study in detail is presented accessibly to anyone following the news.

React Native with CMS-driven content

The app is built in React Native on a single codebase for iOS and Android. Content and poll configurations are managed through the existing EenVandaag CMS, meaning the editorial team can push updates and create new polls without developer involvement.

Why React Native with CMS integration?

EenVandaag's editorial team needs to create, schedule, and close polls on a tight broadcast timeline. Building poll management into an existing CMS, rather than a custom tool, meant the team could work in a system they already knew. React Native gave us one codebase for both platforms without sacrificing the responsiveness needed for live polling.

Live broadcast integrations require close coordination with the production team. Elements worked alongside EenVandaag's editorial and technical teams to map the broadcast flow into the app's polling logic, ensuring polls open and close at the right moments without manual intervention during the live show.

With the polling infrastructure in place, the app can extend into personalised news feeds, historical trend tracking, and deeper demographic insights for registered users.
